TL;DR
Language detection listens to the first few words of a call and picks a language, then keeps listening in case the caller switches. It works well for clearly different languages and is weakest on short utterances, strong accents and heavy code-switching.
An AI phone answering service with language detection greets callers and then continues in the language they speak. Here is how that works and where it can fail.
How language detection works
- Greet. The agent opens with a short, neutral greeting, often bilingual.
- Listen. Speech recognition transcribes the caller's first phrase and estimates the language.
- Choose. The agent replies using a voice and prompt for that language.
- Keep listening. If the caller changes language, the agent can follow.
Some systems let callers choose a language by saying it, as a safety net.
Where it works well
- Callers who speak mostly one language, such as Hindi or English.
- Clear audio and standard accents.
- Longer first sentences that give the model more to work with.
Where it struggles
- One-word answers. "Haan" or "yes" may be too short to detect reliably.
- Heavy code-switching. Hinglish may be detected as either language, so the agent must handle both.
- Noise and strong accents. Phone-line noise reduces accuracy.
- Similar languages. Closely related languages are harder to tell apart.
Design tips that help
- Use a bilingual opening line.
- Offer an explicit choice if detection is uncertain.
- Support Hinglish natively so mixed speech is not an error.
- Allow the caller to ask for another language at any time.
What Swarvo supports
Swarvo voice agents speak Hinglish, Hindi and English and adapt when a caller switches. We confirm exact language behaviour on your own calls during the demo. See the voice agent page and our guide to voice AI for Indian languages.
How to test it
Ask a vendor to take calls from five people: one in Hindi, one in English, one in Hinglish, one with a regional accent and one who switches languages mid-call. Score detection, voice naturalness and recovery from mistakes.
